Bread. Just the smell of this wonderful food can get the immediate attention of most people! So many fun and memorable childhood events include memories of bread making and baking. From holiday favorites to daily breads, this food item dates way back to biblical times and still plays an important role in our lives.

From pizza dough to whole wheat bread, biscuits to soft pretzels, bread is a fun and interesting thing for
kids to study. When studying bread, your child will investigate the science of bread—what the steps are to make bread and what happens at each step to create the finished product. They will learn about some of the many types of bread along with their country of origin; geography lessons via the dinner plate are always memorable!

Day 1: Bread: What Is It?
Day 2: The Story of Bread
Day 3: Types of Bread
Day 4: The Science of Bread
Day 5: Let's Have a Bread Party!

From developing an understanding of the basics of how bread is made and where it comes from, to learning about many kinds of breads—even holiday breads—this is going to be an exciting adventure.

Along the way, there will be science discoveries, such as learning about how yeast works. Your student will also learn a bit of history and geography as he studies the different types of bread and the countries that they are associated with from across the globe.

With this study/lapbook, your child will investigate all kinds of things about bread, including the history of bread, types of bread, some of the countries that created unique kinds of bread, and much more. Each day he will explore and investigate, creating and adding more learning components to his Bountiful Bread lapbook—building a wonderful reminder of all that he is learning to be enjoyed for years to come.

Here’s what homeschooling parents are saying about Bountiful Bread:

"I have been homeschooling for over 10 years and am always looking for new and innovative ways to teach all of my children. . . . Most recently, we completed the “Bountiful Bread” unit study.

Two of my favorite components of this unit study are the book list and video links. Having a prepared list of books on bread available for each age group is truly helpful. I request the entire book list online with my local library so when I arrive the books are ready and waiting for me to pick up. And, what child doesn’t like videos? The video links are wonderful for those who are visual learners. These links being readily available help shorten my prep time immeasurably.

During this unit study, our family learned geography while researching the origins of different types of bread such pita, pumpernickel, and ginger. We learned practical applications of science and mathematics while watching yeast grow in bread and measuring out ingredients to bake it. My children and I were able to have excellent social study discussions around the cultures from which these amazing breads originated. Additionally, my “littles” enjoyed the art lessons derived from the coloring projects provided in the unit study collateral. What we learned in this unit study has a stickiness about it, like the gooey cinnamon rolls we made, that will stick with them forever because it connects with each child’s learning style.

Finally, incorporating Scriptures in each lesson ties into what I am trying to instill in each of my children; a love for the Bread of Life. We learned how God has made bread important to every culture.  Bread is essential, and brings families together. This study did that for our family. It has brought homeschooling to one table where all ages are growing and rising together like loaves in the oven. We all got the sweet satisfaction of using what we learned in all aspects of life. I loved doing this unit study, and look forward to bringing more of these studies to my home school table to feast upon!"

"I've had the best time reading through Amanda's Bountiful Bread! I'm so excited and am looking forward to using this wonderful resource. I've included my first reactions and thoughts in sort of a bullet list below.

  • Bountiful Bread is a unit study that appeals to my age range of children from preschoolers to middle schoolers. What a wonderful way to learn together - with lapbooking, cooking and investigating. This study is complete with the Biblical references and knowledge behind all things bread. Levels of learning integrate Bible, geography, science, copywork, writing, vocabulary/spelling words, projects, coloring pages, reading assignments, a study of inventions, encouragement in the practice of hospitality and even daily, video field trips!
  • As a homeschool mom, I always appreciate how -tos. Amanda Bennett’s unit study even offers practical suggestions for learning – gather all the items you need in a laundry basket so everything is in one place. Plus, download and go is just that – no need for expensive prep. Start where you are and use what you have.
  • In our family, we purposefully spend time each week with what we call cooking fun. Bountiful Bread goes beyond the usual learning through baking together. Yes, math in measuring. However, this unit study teaches the science of yeast, the history of bread, the Biblical reasons bread is used for celebrating and much more.
  • Bountiful Bread includes a lapbooking component. If you have never enjoyed lapbooks before, a video explains how to use this learning tool, as well as links to other resources. Several of my children learn best with this hands-on approach of lapbooking.
  • Biblical references to copy and learn – keep God’s provision of daily bread at the forefront of studies.
  • Not only the how to – the science behind making bread – but the history, origins of bread around the world and how we celebrate holidays with bread.
  • This unit is designed for a week-long study. Bountiful Bread is so rich with information, families could easily spend longer learning about bread.
  • I always love a unit celebration! Celebrating your studies brings closure and helps children see how much they have learned. Bountiful Bread offers a party all planned out for the end of your unit study – complete with recipes."

"If you haven't tried one of Amanda's unit studies, now is the time. I just finished reading through Bountiful Bread from Download N Go, and I can't wait to use this in our homeschool! We are currently learning about Egypt in Genesis and this fabulous unit study will fit in perfectly.

Download N Go unit studies cover just about every subject you can think of, but in a fun and memorable way. Each time we do one, we have a blast, and enjoy learning so much more. Unit studies have become the way we "do school" in our home.

In Bountiful Bread, you'll travel to Greece, Egypt, Mexico and Germany. You'll learn about breads used during the holidays. You'll learn about the steps for making bread, and read well-loved stories involving bread. You even get to watch bread making in action! There are experiments, book suggestions and videos abounding in this great study, as well as lots of math and science. Amanda and her team keep impressing me!

I am especially excited with how much Bible is incorporated into Bountiful Bread, which is the most important subject of all in our home, and the "Idiom of the Day" will be a hit for sure. This title will also keep us in the kitchen, one of the things I want to incorporate more of in our school. A beautiful and fun unit study with daily bread recipes? Yes please!"

"As I was going through the unit, I would have thoughts on something great that should be included and to no surprise really, I would stumble upon that exact thing shortly there after, the first thought was a video of grinding grain, and then there it was! Another idea was to make butter in baby food jars, and then there it was!

I love the holiday and country references to bread, and the science experiment ideas! Great hands on!

Reading this unit made me crave bread so much I made french bread for dinner. ;)

I think it's great!
